Beyond Home Fellowship Groups

At the Village Church, we have always understood small groups to be a key component of our church’s life and ministry. The often mid-week gatherings for prayer, Bible Study, worship and fellowship, based in homes, cafes or bars throughout the city, have provided the more personal context where real disciples of Jesus Christ were made.

We are now continuing that maturing in people through what we call discipipods—one-on-one or one-on-several discipling relationships, formed for fellowship directed toward spiritual growth. These pods still meet regularly during the week, but the leaders are more consciously addressing the spiritual maturing of the participants.

What happens in a Discipipod meeting? The leader and learners read a Bible story together and discuss its meaning and message for them. The leader shares his or her experience with this message, directs the learner to other resources and holds the learner accountable for putting it into practice. The topics are chosen based on what the learners are facing in their lives currently.

The Bridge Builder

An old man, going a lone highway,

Came, at the evening, cold and gray,
To a chasm, vast, and deep, and wide,
Through which was flowing a sullen tide.
The old man crossed in the twilight dim;
The sullen stream had no fears for him;
But he turned, when safe on the other side,
And built a bridge to span the tide.

“Old man,” said a fellow pilgrim, near,
“You are wasting strength with building here;
Your journey will end with the ending day;
You never again must pass this way;
You have crossed the chasm, deep and wide—
Why build you the bridge at the eventide?”

The builder lifted his old gray head:
“Good friend, In the path I have come,” he said,
“There followeth after me today
A youth, whose feet must pass this way.
This chasm, that has been naught to me,
To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be.
He, too, must cross in the twilight dim;
Good friend, I am building the bridge for him.”
